In an opera, and in an (a big story-concert with singers, usually with no acting on a stage), an aria is a song for one voice. The music lets one person hold a feeling — love, anger, sadness — for a while, and the story waits. It is not a song for two people, and it is not the quick, talking-like singing that moves the plot along. Though actually, people now also use it a little loosely for any solo in that kind of music. The English word is the Italian word, kept as is.
詠嘆調
組成From Italian aria, a changed form of Latin āerem, from Ancient Greek ἀήρ, “air.” English air is a doublet: the same old word arriving by a different road. In Italian, aria is also just “air.”
