In old Greek stories, Argus is a creature with many eyes — a hundred, in the best-known telling. The goddess Hera used him as a guard, because with so many eyes he could watch almost everything. After he died, the stories say his eyes were set on the tail of the peacock. That is why the name still carries the idea of watching very carefully. Some newspapers have been called the Argus for that reason: they want you to think they never miss a piece of news. Though actually, this is a name, not an everyday English word. You will meet it in myths, in paper titles, and sometimes in the phrase argus-eyed, meaning “watching closely.”
