1. 1

In ancient Greek stories, the Argonauts are the band of strong, brave men who sailed with Jason in the ship Argo to find the Golden Fleece. The name is simply “the sailors of the Argo.” They are a group, not one person; Jason is their leader. Later English sometimes borrows the name for people who set out on a hard, hopeful journey — gold-seekers in California were once called Argonauts too — though actually in class you will nearly always meet the Greek sailors first. This is myth and story, not a science word.
