Arduous is a rather formal word for work that asks a lot of you — not a little hard, but long, heavy effort. A climb is arduous when the path is steep and your body must keep pushing. A task can be arduous with no muscles at all: a slow court case, months of study, a repair that will not end. The feeling is weight plus time, not one sharp moment of trouble. Though actually, in everyday talk most people just say hard or tough; arduous turns up more in books, news, and careful speech, when someone wants you to feel how demanding the job was.

組成From Latin arduus, “lofty, high, steep, hard to reach, difficult, laborious.” Akin to Irish ard, “high” — the old picture is a high, steep place you must work to climb.
