The Ardennes is a forested, hilly area where southeast Belgium, northern Luxembourg, and northern France meet. History books remember it because hard fighting happened there in both World War I and World War II. The best-known battle is the Battle of the Bulge (1944–45), when German forces pushed into this region and the front line bulged — then broke. Though actually, before it was a battlefield in textbooks, it was (and still is) a place of woods, villages, and winter cold, which is part of why that battle was so bitter. The name comes from the Latin name for the forest, Arduenna silva; the first part is likely from a Celtic word meaning “dark” or “hard to see through.” In Taiwan, history class usually says 阿登 and 阿登戰役. Do not confuse it with Shakespeare’s Forest of Arden in England — a different forest, a different country, a different story.
