Archeology is the American spelling of archaeology: the study of people in the past through the things they left in the ground — pots, bones, walls, tools. It is not a different subject and not a lighter or more popular version of the same field. British English, and most international academic writing, keep the ae: archaeology. American newspapers, schools, and many US universities drop it to e: archeology. The person is an archeologist or , matching the spelling you chose. In Taiwan exams and textbooks you will usually meet the British form. People sometimes stretch the word as a metaphor — digging through layers of a family’s old papers — though that is not the school meaning.
組成From Middle French archéologie, from Ancient Greek ἀρχαιολογία (arkhaiología), from ἀρχαῖος (arkhaîos, “ancient, old”) + λόγος (lógos, “speech, study”). It looks like archeo- + -logy, though it was not first coined that way in English.
