An archaism is an old word or phrase that people no longer really use, except when they want the flavour of the past. You meet it in old prayers, in legal English, and in writers putting “thee” and “thou” in a character’s mouth. Though actually, not every old-sounding word is fully dead: some live on in a small corner — church, law, or one region — so they are old-fashioned there, not gone. The word can also mean an old style of writing or art that copies the past, but the first meaning a will meet is the word or phrase itself. It shares a Greek root for “ancient” with archaeology, but the jobs are different: one is old wording, the other is old things in the ground.
