Arcadia, usually with a capital A, is an area in the country where people have a pleasant, simple life — or the dream of that place. It began as a real mountain region in Greece. Ancient Greek and Latin poets used the name for a beautiful countryside of shepherds, songs, and no city trouble. Later writers kept Arcadia for any countryside that feels like that dream: quiet fields, no rush, nothing ugly. People still use it in books, and in names of towns, hotels, and housing. Though actually, the real Arcadia was a hard, rocky place; the soft dream is the poets’ version. The word can name the Greek region, or the idea. It is not related to arcade (a covered walk, or a hall of game machines); they only look a little alike.
