An arachnid is a small creature with eight legs and a body in two main parts, not three. Spiders are the ones everyone knows; scorpions, ticks, and mites are arachnids too. They are not insects — insects have six legs and usually a body in three parts, and many have wings. This is a science-class word; in ordinary talk people just say spider, unless they need the larger group. If you are counting legs to sort a creature, eight means you are in arachnid country.
