An appurtenance is a smaller thing that belongs with a bigger thing. In law — and that is where you will meet this word most — it is a right, a building, or a feature that goes with a piece of land: a path, a garage, a water right. You buy the house, and the appurtenances come with it. Writers also stretch it, in a fancy way, for the extra bits that travel with a job or a lifestyle: the appurtenances of office, the appurtenances of wealth. It is rare and formal. Everyday English just says extra parts, fittings, or things that come with it. Though actually, the legal sense is stricter than stuff I own; it means attached, belonging, going with the main thing — not sitting beside it by chance.
