Appomattox is a town in Virginia, in the United States. English speakers remember it because that is where the American Civil War in effect ended. In 1865, at a nearby site called Appomattox Court House, General Robert E. Lee — leader of the Confederate (Southern) army — surrendered to General S. Grant — leader of the Union (Northern) army. After that, the war between North and South wound down. The place is now a national park. When Americans say Appomattox, they often mean that surrender, not only the town: the name stands for the end of the war. It is a place name, so it always starts with a capital letter. Though actually, the fighting did not stop in every place at the exact same hour, but history books treat Appomattox as the ending.
組成The river was named after the Appamatuck tribe of Native Americans (whose name is from Powhatan). The town was named after the county, which in turn was named after the river.
