1. 1

An applet is a small computer program that lives inside a larger program and does one job — for example a little tool on a web page that finds documents, or a tiny calculator that runs inside a browser. For years the word was closely tied to Java: a Java applet sat in a web page and ran there, without being a full app on your computer. The name is app plus -let, a small version of something. Though actually, the word feels a little old now. Those in-page programs are much rarer, and people more often say widget, plugin, or just app. You still meet applet in some software for a small control or a mini-tool.
