When you appease someone, you try to make them less angry, or stop them from coming after you, by giving them what they want. You are not winning. You are buying a quieter moment. A parent may appease a crying child with a . A country may appease a stronger neighbour by saying yes to an unfair demand. Though actually the word often carries a little : people feel you have given in, and that the other side may only ask for more. History class uses it that way about the 1930s, when Britain and France tried to keep peace by giving Hitler pieces of what he wanted. It is a fairly formal verb. In ordinary talk we more often say calm someone down, give in, or keep the peace. Older writing also speaks of appeasing hunger or thirst — feeding the feeling until it eases — but that use lives more in books than in the street.
