An apostate is someone who has stopped believing in a religion, or who has stopped supporting a political party or cause they once stood with. It can be a noun (he is an apostate) or an adjective (apostate views). Like apostasy, it is strong and rather formal. In religious talk it can sound like an accusation; in political talk it can mean a . Though actually, the person themselves may simply say they changed their mind — apostate is often the word used by the people they left.
