The apogee of something is its highest, most successful point — the moment when a career, a band, a fashion, or a company is at its peak, before it levels off or falls. Writers and news people like the word; it sounds a little grand. Friends would more often say peak or high point. Though actually, the older sense is still alive in space talk: a satellite’s apogee is the farthest point in its path from Earth. The “most successful part” meaning is a picture taken from that — as far up as it goes. The opposite point, nearest Earth, is the perigee; people almost never stretch perigee in the same proud way. Apogee is a noun: we say “the apogee of her career,” not “an apogee film” meaning merely “a very good one.”
