An API is a set of rules and ready-made computer code that lets two programs talk to each other and pass data, without one program needing to know all the secret insides of the other. App makers use APIs all the time: a weather app may ask a weather company's API for today's numbers; a shop's website may use a payment API to take your card. You can think of it as a counter in a shop: you ask for what is on the list, in the allowed way, and something comes back. It is a tech word, used by programmers and in product talk. It is not the app you tap — the app may use an API the way a customer uses a counter. Write it in capital letters. A completely different word spelled API is a Tibetan name meaning "grandmother"; that is not this entry.
組成Short for Application Programming Interface: the application is the program, programming is how we tell computers what to do, and the interface is the meeting point where two systems can work together. Unrelated: another API is from Tibetan for "grandmother."
