An aperitif is a drink you have before a meal, to open the appetite. It is usually alcoholic and not very large — a glass of wine, , or something similarly bitter or dry, not a big sweet cocktail. The word still feels French, and you will also see it written apéritif, with the accent. People use it in restaurants and in slightly careful talk about food; at home many speakers just say a drink before dinner. Though actually, it is the drink, not the food: a small dish before the meal is an appetizer or starter. After the meal, a heavier drink is a digestif — a different word, a different moment.
