The aorta is the largest artery in the body: the wide tube that takes blood away from the heart and starts it on its trip to the rest of you. Fresh blood leaves the left side of the heart, goes into the aorta, and the aorta rises, arches, and then runs down, sending branches toward the head, the arms, and the lower body. Though actually, students often mix this up with a vein. Arteries, including the aorta, carry blood away from the heart; veins bring it back. Because so much blood moves through this one vessel, doctors treat serious damage to it as an emergency. You will also hear aortic as the describing word, as in the aortic valve, the little door where the aorta meets the heart.
