An AONB is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: a stretch of countryside in the United Kingdom that officials have named as especially beautiful, so people are not free to build on it or change it in a big way. You say the letters A-O-N-B. You will see them on maps and road signs in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Though actually, it is not the same thing as a national park, even if the feeling is close. A British national park has a stronger organisation and more visitor machinery; an AONB is a protection label on the look of the land — hills, coast, villages — so the view does not get eaten by new houses and roads.
