AOL is a company and a kind of internet service that began in the United States. The letters stand for its original name, America Online. For many families in the 1990s, AOL was how they first got onto the internet: you used the phone line, heard a squeaky connecting sound, and then you had email and a simple set of pages for news, chat, and business information. You say the three letters, A-O-L. Though actually, AOL was never the whole internet. It was a garden that made going online feel easy and safe, and then the open web grew past it. Younger students may only know the name from old films, or from the line "you've got mail," which was how AOL told you a message had arrived. It is a piece of internet history now, not the way most people get online today.
