- 1
A city and major port in the north of Belgium, in Dutch-speaking Flanders, on a river that leads to the sea. It is not the capital (that is Brussels) and it is not Amsterdam. English keeps this form of the name; Dutch is Antwerpen, French is Anvers. Famous for its harbour, diamond trade, and old painting. You meet it in geography, news about shipping, and art history. Stress falls on the first part: ANT-werp.
