Informal, especially American: restless, , unable to keep still — usually because you are waiting, , or impatient, not because you are terrified. A child waiting for the bell; someone waiting for news. It comes from the joke that you have ants in your pants. Younger speakers and casual talk. Too for a formal letter; in careful English you might say restless or impatient instead.

組成ants + -y, from the figure of speech ants in one’s pants. First noted as rural Southern US speech in the early 20th century.
