One of the branched bony things that grow from a deer’s head, usually the male’s. People often say “horns” in everyday talk, though actually antlers are bone, they branch, and they fall off and grow again each year; horns on cows and goats are a different material and usually stay. Moose and elk have antlers too. are the special case: females can have them as well. You see the word in nature films, hunting, and Christmas pictures. A town or creek named Antler is a different story — someone thought the streams looked like these branches on a map.

組成From Old French antoillier (“antler, horn”), from ante- (“in front of”) + a piece from oil (“eye”), so the horn was pictured as sitting in front of the deer’s eye. A Latin form *anteocularis (“before the eye”) is possible but not actually found in old texts.
