An antioxidant is a substance that slows or stops a kind of chemical wear called — the same family of change you see when a cut apple turns brown or iron goes rusty. Food labels and health magazines love this word. They often say antioxidants “clean” the body and protect it from cancer. That is the tidy public story. The quieter picture is this: in the body, that wear is tied to restless pieces that can knock into cells, and antioxidants can calm that down. Vitamin C and vitamin E are the ones people name first; many fruits, leaves, and teas have some. The word works two ways: as a noun (an antioxidant) and as an adjective (antioxidant foods). Though actually, swallowing huge extra amounts in pills does not turn you into a superhero, and scientists still argue about how much the extra pills help. In everyday English it belongs to health, labels, and magazines more than to careful lab talk.
組成anti- (against) + oxidant (something that causes oxidation, the going-rusty / going-brown kind of chemical change). Oxidant came into English by way of French. From anti- + oxidant.
