Antioch is a place name, not a kind of thing.
Antioch安提阿(Antioch) is a place name是一個地名,not a kind of thing不是某一類東西的通稱。
The famous Antioch was a city in what is now southern Turkey, also known today as Antakya. It was built in 301 BC and soon became famous for its buildings and its trade. In 64 BC it became the eastern capital of the Roman Empire. It was one of the great cities of the old Greek and Roman world, a mix of peoples and languages.
The famous Antioch那個有名的安提阿 was a city曾是一座城市,in what is now southern Turkey位在現在土耳其的南部,also known today as Antakya現在也叫安塔基亞(Antakya)。It它 was built in 301 BC建於西元前301年,and然後 soon became famous for its buildings and its trade很快就以建築和貿易出名。In 64 BC在西元前64年,it它 became the eastern capital of the Roman Empire成了羅馬帝國的東方首都。It它 was one of the great cities of the old Greek and Roman world是古希臘羅馬世界裡數一數二的大城市,a mix of peoples and languages也是各種民族和語言交雜的地方。
In early Christian history it matters a lot: followers of Jesus were first called Christians there. There was more than one Antioch — kings named several cities after the same family name, Antiochus — so an old book can mean a different town with the same name. The old city later shrank; the city on that spot today is Antakya.
In early Christian history在早期基督教歷史上,it matters a lot它非常重要:followers of Jesus耶穌的追隨者 were first called Christians there最早就是在那裡被稱為基督徒的。There was more than one Antioch叫安提阿的城市不只一座——kings named several cities after the same family name, Antiochus因為國王們用同一個家族名字 Antiochus 替好幾座城命了名——so an old book can mean a different town with the same name所以一本古書裡講的,可能是同名的另一座城。The old city later shrank那座古城後來衰落了;the city on that spot today is Antakya現在那個位置上的城市是安塔基亞(Antakya)。
Later, towns in the United States took the name too, copying the old famous one, especially because of the church history.
Later後來,towns in the United States took the name too美國也有城鎮取了這個名字,copying the old famous one是仿照那座古代名城,especially because of the church history尤其是因為教會歷史的緣故。
In English it is always a name: you say in Antioch, never an antioch.
In English在英文裡,it is always a name這永遠是個地名:you say in Antioch你會說 in Antioch, never an antioch而不會說 an antioch。
組成The name came into English from Middle English Antioche, from Old French Antioche, from Latin Antiochīa, from Ancient Greek Antiókheia. That was built from the man's name Antiochus plus a place-name ending, after the father of Seleucus I, the general of Alexander who founded the Seleucid empire. Later kings reused the name for other cities. Much later, towns in the United States copied it from the famous old city, which had been an important early Christian centre.
