Antigone is a young woman in ancient Greek story, the daughter of Oedipus. After her two brothers kill each other in a war for Thebes, King Creon buries one with honour and orders that the other, Polynices, be left unburied — a cruel punishment in that world, because the dead were owed burial as a religious duty. Antigone cannot decide, at first, whether to obey the king or do what she believes is right for her brother and the gods. She buries Polynices anyway. Creon has her shut in a tomb; she kills herself before he can change his mind, and the deaths spill on to his own family. Her story is the subject of the play Antigone by Sophocles, still read and staged because it will not tidy itself into one moral: law against love, the city against the family, a girl against a king. Say it an-TIG-uh-nee, with the stress in the middle.
