Antibes is a city on the south-east coast of France, on the Mediterranean Sea, known as a fashionable place for holidays. It sits on that famous sunny shore between other holiday towns, with an old stone centre and a harbour. In English it is only a place name; you will meet it on maps, in travel writing, and in stories about painters who worked on that coast. It is not an 'anti-' word in the English sense, though the Greek inside it did mean 'across' or 'opposite.' From French Antibes, from Ancient Greek Ἀντίπολις (Antípolis, 'cross-city'): a city set over against another. Though actually, English speakers often keep the French-sounding shape and do not try to translate it, the way we also keep Nice and Cannes as names rather than meanings.
