Anti-tank describes weapons, mines, guns, or missiles made to stop or destroy a tank — the heavy fighting vehicle with tracks and thick metal skin. An anti-tank ditch, an anti-tank missile, an anti-tank gun: the second half stays the same, and the first half says 'this is for that machine.' It is army and news language, tidy and technical. Though actually, a tank in English is also a big container for water or fuel, and students sometimes picture a weapon against a water tank; in this word it is always the fighting vehicle. Some anti-tank weapons can also hurt other heavy vehicles, so reports use the label for the job the weapon was built to do, not for every possible target.

組成anti- (against) + tank (the heavy fighting vehicle).
