An anteroom is a small room that sits in front of a larger, more important room. People often wait there before they are called in — outside a hall, an office, a doctor’s room, or a private chamber. It is a rather formal, slightly old-fashioned word. In everyday talk many people just say waiting room, lobby, or hallway, and that is usually fine. Though actually, an anteroom is not only for waiting: it can simply be the little room you pass through to reach the big one, like a front room in an old house or a palace. You will meet it more in books and in descriptions of official places than in casual chat.
