An antagonist is the person on the other side from you — in a fight, a game, an argument, or a war. If you are playing, the antagonist is your opponent. If two groups are quarrelling, each can call the other the antagonist. In stories and films, the antagonist is the character who stands against the main person. That character is often a “bad guy”, but not always: they just work against what the hero wants. Doctors also use antagonist for a drug that blocks another drug or a chemical in the body — same idea of working against, just not a person. It is a rather word. In a casual quarrel, people more often say opponent, rival, or enemy.
組成From Latin antagonista, from Ancient Greek antagōnistēs, “opponent”: anti- (against) + agōnistēs (a person in a contest or fight).
