To reply to a parent, teacher, or boss when they tell you something — instead of quietly accepting it. It is mostly said about children: 'Don't answer back!' Usually no object; British speakers sometimes put the person in: 'Don't answer your mother back.' The word carries a feeling, so you hear it FROM the adult, not from the child.
