Anschluss is a German word that English uses for one famous event: in 1938, Hitler's Germany took over Austria. Austria stopped being a separate country and was joined to Germany. In German the word can just mean joining or connecting one thing to another — a quite ordinary idea. In English, though, people almost always mean this 1938 takeover, not joining in general. Historians still argue about how much Austrians wanted it and how much it was forced. You will meet it in history class and in writing about the Second World War, not in everyday talk. It is a serious, formal word, and it is usually written with a capital A.
