Angola is a country on the southwest coast of Africa. lies to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. A small northern piece, Cabinda, sits a little apart. The capital is , a large city on the sea. Portuguese is the official language: Angola was a Portuguese colony for centuries and became independent in 1975. A long civil war followed, ending in 2002, and that history still shapes daily life. The country is rich in oil and diamonds, though actually many people have not shared equally in that wealth. An older population figure you may still see — about 18.5 million from 2014 — is out of date; the country has grown a great deal since then. The English name comes from Portuguese Angola, from Kimbundu ngola, a title of local kings when the Portuguese arrived in the 1400s (first attested around 1595). Scholars sometimes compare Kituba ngolo, “strength.” Though actually, the same name later travelled to the United States: a famous prison in Louisiana is called Angola after a slave plantation that had taken the country’s name, because many enslaved people there had been taken from this part of Africa.
組成From Portuguese (Reino de) Angola, “(kingdom of) Angola,” from Kimbundu ngola, a title held by local kings at the time of Portuguese colonisation in the 1400s. Compare Kituba ngolo (“strength”). Attested in English from about 1595.
