An Anglo-Indian is someone whose family is mixed British and Indian — British on one side, Indian on the other, or a longer mix of the two. In India this is also the name of a recognised community, with its own food, churches, schools, and memory of the years when Britain ruled India. The word is a noun and an adjective: an Anglo-Indian family, Anglo-Indian cooking. It can also mean things that join Britain and India, as in Anglo-Indian relations or Anglo-Indian trade. Though actually, older books sometimes used Anglo-Indian for a British person living in India, even with no Indian family at all. That older use is easy to mix up with the mixed-family sense, so careful writers now say which they mean. It is a normal, slightly formal word; in India it can be how people name their own community, not a label stuck on from outside.
