Anglesey is an island off the north-west coast of Wales. A narrow stretch of sea, the Menai Strait, lies between it and the rest of Wales, and the Menai Bridge (with a later bridge beside it) carries people across. It is a lived-in island — towns, farms, holiday traffic — not a bare rock. The English name looks as if it meant 'island of the Angles', the old English people, and that story gets repeated. Though actually, the name is probably Old Norse: 'hook island', or 'Ǫngli's island'; mixing it up with the Angles is a folk tale laid on top. Welsh speakers call it Ynys Môn. Say it ANG-gəl-see.
組成Probably Old Norse Ǫngullsey, 'hook island' (ǫngull 'hook' + ey 'island'), or Ǫnglisey, 'Ǫngli's island'. Later folk etymology mixed the name up with the Angles; that is not the real naming.
