A garden plant whose flowers may be red, white, or blue — and other colours too. The blooms sit on thin stems and can look simple and open. and flower shops use the word; it is not everyday street English. Though actually, English also uses anemone for a sea animal that looks a bit like a flower (a sea anemone), but this entry is the plant. The old Greek name was explained as “daughter of the wind”; some scholars think it may instead come from an older Mediterranean name related to words for the flower in Arabic and Hebrew. Those two stories both get repeated; they do not all agree.
