The common pairing is anecdotal evidence: it can be interesting, and sometimes it points you in a useful direction, though actually it is not enough on its own to prove a claim. Newspapers, doctors, and scientists all use the word this way. It is a fairly formal adjective, more at home in reports and arguments than in casual chat.
