Anaemia is a medical word for when your blood cannot carry enough oxygen around the body. Often there are not enough healthy red blood cells, or not enough of the iron-rich stuff inside them. A person with anaemia may look pale, feel very tired, get out of breath on the stairs, or feel cold and dizzy. The most common kind, especially in young women, comes from not enough iron in food, or from losing blood. Other kinds come from not enough vitamin B12, from long illness, or from the body not making blood well. Though actually, it does not mean you have “no blood” — you still have blood, but it is weaker at its job. British spelling is anaemia; American spelling is anemia. In Taiwan you will see both, but hospital English often uses the American form. Doctors treat the cause, not only the tired feeling.
