An anaconda is a very large snake from South America. It does not kill with poison. It wraps its strong body around an animal and holds on until the animal cannot breathe. The green anaconda is one of the heaviest snakes in the world, and it spends a lot of time in rivers and wet forest, not only on dry land. People sometimes say anaconda for any giant snake they see in a film, but strictly it is this South American snake, not the pythons of Asia and Africa — though in everyday talk the two get mixed all the time. Though actually, the name itself is a bit of a mess: it first pointed at a snake in Sri Lanka, and only later stuck to the South American one. Scholars do not all agree where the word came from, so nobody should pretend this origin is tidy.
組成From New Latin anacandaia (“python”), which first named a constrictor in Sri Lanka. From there scholars split: it may come from Sinhalese henakandayā, “whip snake” (heṇa “lightning, thunderbolt” + kaⁿda “stem, trunk, body”), or from Tamil āṉaikkoṉṟāṉ, “having killed an elephant” (āṉai “elephant” + koṉṟāṉ “having killed”).
