Amtrak is the company that runs most long-distance passenger trains in the United States. Freight trains — the ones that carry goods — belong to other companies; Amtrak is the people-train brand, made around 1971. It does not cover the country the way trains cover Taiwan or Japan: many towns have no Amtrak at all, and a trip can be slow next to a plane. People say “take Amtrak” the way we say “take the high-speed rail.” Though actually, in the US, flying is often cheaper and faster, so Amtrak is a choice, not the default. The name is a blend, not a person’s name.
