Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands. English speakers know it for its canals (old water-streets instead of extra roads), for bikes, and for famous museums and art galleries. Tourist English also talks about a relaxed city mood around sex and soft drugs. Though actually, a lot of local people are tired of that , and the rules have got tighter than the old story suggests. Another tidy mix-up: the Dutch government mainly sits in The Hague, not here — Amsterdam is still the capital. People say “go to Amsterdam” as a place name; we do not really use Amsterdam as a common noun for anything else.
