Amritsar is a city in Punjab, in the northwest of India. For Sikhs it is a holy city: people travel there to visit the Golden Temple, which sits in a pool of water. The name comes from words meaning “nectar” and “lake,” so “lake of nectar.” In 1919, under British rule, soldiers fired on a crowd at a peaceful meeting in the city; English still calls this the Amritsar massacre (also Jallianwala Bagh). Schoolbooks often give the number 379 dead; though actually later counts were higher, and people still argue about the true number. Students meet the name in history and in talk about Sikh pilgrimage more than as a casual travel word.
