An amour is a love affair, especially a secret or slightly scandalous one — not the ordinary English word for “love.” English took French amour and narrowed it. In French, amour can be quite normal love; in English it raises an . “His amour in Paris” means a person or a liaison, not a warm feeling in general. It sounds old-fashioned, novelistic, a little fancy. You would not text “I have an amour.” People now say affair, , or they just tell the story. The pronunciation follows French more than old English would have: stress on the second part, roughly a-MOOR (the expected older English sound would have been more like “AM-er”). Though actually, you will still meet relatives such as enamoured, which kept a more English rhythm.
組成Inherited from Middle English amour, from Middle French amour, from Old French amor, from Latin amor (“love”). Continual French influence keeps the modern sound.
