An ammeter is a tool that tells you how strong an electric current is — how much electricity is flowing through a wire right now. The number it shows is in amperes, often to amps, so the name is really “ampere-meter.” You meet it in physics class and in electrical work, not in ordinary chat. Though actually, you cannot use it like a voltmeter: an ammeter goes in the path of the current (in series), so the electricity runs through it; a voltmeter sits across two points instead. People sometimes say “amp meter” out loud. If it reads zero, nothing is flowing.
