The Amish are a Christian group, especially in Pennsylvania and Ohio in the United States. They live somewhat apart from other people and keep many strict rules about behaviour: plain traditional clothes, and they do not use telephones, cars, and other modern inventions in the way most Americans do. Though actually, “the Amish” is not one single switch — some communities are stricter than others, and a few rules vary from place to place. They come from a Swiss Anabaptist tradition, named after a preacher, Jakob Amman. People often mix them up with the Mennonites, who share history with them but usually mix more with modern life. The word can name the people (the Amish) or describe their ways (Amish farms, Amish dress).
