Amerindian is another word for Native American: the peoples who lived in the Americas before Europeans arrived, and their descendants. You will meet it most in older books and in writing about anthropology and archaeology (the study of people, and of old things in the ground). It can be an adjective (Amerindian languages) or a noun (the Amerindians of the Andes). Though actually, in everyday American English this is not the word most people use now, and not the word most communities use about themselves. Native American, Indigenous, or a specific nation’s name (Navajo, Quechua, Maya) is what you will hear more. Amerindian is not a rude word, but it sounds academic, and a little dated, especially in the United States. Some writers still prefer it for the peoples of South and Central America. It is not a word for people from India.
