    Amended is the -ed form of amend. As a verb, it tells you the changing already happened: they amended the rules last night. As an adjective, it sits in front of a noun: an amended contract, the amended version, an amended statement. It still means only corrections and small changes, not a brand-new thing with a new name. News and law use it all the time. It feels official, even when the change itself is tiny.

    That has been modified from a previous form.

    • We voted on the amended bill, and it passed.
    • The appointment of the mayor remained in the hands of the governor and council until the Revolution, when it was transferred by the State constitution to the governor and council of appointment which shared with him the appointing power. By the amended State constitution of 1821, the duty of electing the mayor annually was imposed on the common council, and so continued until 1834, when provision was made by statute for his election by a vote of the qualified city electors.
