To amble is to walk slowly, in a relaxed way, with no hurry. You can also take an amble — the slow walk itself. It is a gentle, almost lazy kind of walking, the opposite of rushing or marching. Though actually, English first used it for the way some horses walk: a smooth, rolling walk that does not bounce the rider. People then borrowed that picture for a slow human walk. You will hear it in stories and everyday talk when the walk itself is the point — a pleasant, going-along.

組成From Old French ambler (to walk as a horse does), from Latin ambulō (to walk). It is a doublet of ambulate — same Latin root, different path into English.
