If you are ambidextrous, you can use your right hand and your left hand equally well — write, throw, cut, play — as if both hands were your “good” hand. Most people have a stronger side; this word is for the uncommon case where both sides really match. Doctors and sports coaches use it as a straight description. Though actually, people stretch it. Someone “ambidextrous” at work may only mean they are good in two quite different kinds of work, not that they use both hands. Older, rarer English sometimes used it for a person who could play both sides in an argument — not a compliment. The meaning you will meet most is still the hands.

組成From Medieval Latin ambidexter + English -ous. ambi- means “both”; dexter means “right” (the right hand). So the old picture is “both hands are like a right hand.” By the look of the English word, it is also ambi- + dextrous (“skillful”).
