    Amatory means expressing sexual or romantic love. It is a , rather old-fashioned adjective. You find it in talk about poems, letters, and art: amatory verse, an amatory glance in a painting. It is not the everyday word for a crush, and it is not as blunt as sexual; it sits in the literary lane, where love and desire are being shown on the page. People almost never say it in the street. If a student wants to talk about a love story in class, romantic or love is the natural choice; amatory is for when you are naming that old literary flavour on purpose. It has nothing to do with being an amateur.
